Ayotte calls for next-generation nuclear, outlines education initiatives in State of the State address

CONCORD, N.H. —
Gov. Kelly Ayotte highlighted energy policy, education and public safety Thursday in her State of the State address.

Ayotte said she wanted to make New Hampshire a leader in next-generation nuclear power, a proposal that got a standing ovation from mostly Republican lawmakers.

“Today, I am directing our Department of Energy to build pathways to foster the next generation of nuclear power right here in New Hampshire,” Ayotte said. “I have asked the department to bring together stakeholders, lawmakers and organizations focused on nuclear generation to ensure our state is at the forefront of this pivotal technology.”

There are questions about how quickly nuclear power could be brought online. It could take several years, potentially stretching past this decade, for new nuclear facilities to begin generating power.
